What a First Session Looks Like

If you're thinking about starting therapy in West Cork, the first session can feel like unfamiliar territory. A lot of people imagine it as something intense or clinical, but in reality it's simply a conversation — a safe, steady hour where you can talk openly and begin to make sense of what's going on in your life.

When you arrive, there's no pressure to impress, no list of "correct" answers. We sit down, take our time, and talk about what brings you here. For many people, especially men, the first thing they say is, "I'm not sure where to start." That's completely normal. You don't need a perfectly organised story. You just need to show up as you are.

A huge number of people across Ireland experience anxiety, depression, stress and overwhelm at some point. These are not rare conditions; they're part of the human experience. Therapy has been proven time and again to significantly reduce symptoms of both anxiety and depression. You're not alone, and you're not "weak" for seeking support. In fact, reaching out early is one of the strongest, healthiest steps you can take.

In the first session, we explore the general picture of how you've been feeling. From there, we look at what you might like to change or understand better. My approach is person-centred and humanistic, meaning the focus is on you — your pace, your voice, your goals. There's no judgement and no rushing. Alongside that, I integrate Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which is highly effective for anxiety, depression, panic, overthinking and unhelpful patterns. Some people want the deeper reflective space of person-centred therapy; others want the practical structure of CBT. Most benefit from a blend.

By the end of the first session, people usually feel relief — not because everything is solved, but because they realise therapy is simply a warm, human space where change can begin. They learn that therapy isn't just for "big problems," but a proactive way to handle stress, manage emotions, improve mental wellbeing and enjoy life more fully.

A first therapy session isn't an interrogation. It's a beginning — a chance to breathe, speak honestly, and discover that support is available, right here in West Cork.
